I was destined for stardom.

From the age of seven, I was an all-star.

Parent’s praised me, coaches worshipped me.

As I got older, girls begged for me.

I was Beltline’s baseball God, guaranteed to put this small town on the map.

Then, after one night, that future vanished.

The legend was laid to rest.

I gave up my scholarship.

I fled from Beltline.

I left behind the girl.

Now, I’m back.

Jogging up the stairs to the second floor, I sneak into the back row of the classroom. I pull out my laptop and quickly catch up with the professor’s lecture. The guy a couple seats down passes a syllabus over, and when I turn to thank him, I’m reminded that nothing comes easy in my life.“Is there a reason you were holding my girlfriend’s hand?” Ella’s boyfriend whispers, sliding into the open seat between us.

Well…shit.

“She won’t be your girlfriend for long,” my cockiness answers for me. My arrogance is a great intimidator that’s always worked in getting me what I want.

“Who are you?”

As his beady eyes try to daunt me, I get an up close look at him. I can see why El might have fallen for him. He’s a safe bet. Probably riding the coattails of his family’s money, paving his way with his arrogant little bitch frat brothers. It only assures me of one thing. I don’t have to fight him for El. This guy wouldn’t start a fight if I fucked her right in the middle of his bed. El is just a trophy to him. He doesn’t love her like I do.

“I’m just an old friend. We have a long history together.” I glance at him from the corner of my eye, offering him a quick wink.

His knuckles whiten as he clenches his pen. It couldn’t be more satisfying, knowing I’m getting under his skin.

His annoyed expression tells me that Ella hasn’t been so open about her life and her past. This guy doesn’t have a shot.

“She’s taken, so keep your hands to yourself.”

A few heads flip around after his voice heightens.

Not needing a professor to hate me on day one, I lean in closer to whisper in his ear, “I can’t make any promises. It’s nothing personal, believe me, but technically, she’s always been mine.” I ease back against my chair right as the professor’s eyes catch mine.

Liam’s head whips around, and I wait for him to ask me to take our discussion outside. But he cowers, like I knew he would.

“Try to steal her away from me, and see what happens,” he says.

“I’m not going to have to try hard. Your time with her was over the moment she saw me.”

The professor forcefully clears her throat, eyeing us. If we don’t end this conversation soon, we’ll both be kicked out.

“Don’t be so cocky, asshole. The fact that I don’t know anything about you, and the fact that she’s never mentioned your name, show what she really thinks of you.”

“You two”—the professor points, and a hundred pairs of eyes turn in our direction—“since you’re so chatty, maybe you should be conducting the lecture this morning?” She crosses her arms over her purple blouse and waits for our answer.

“Sorry, Professor Knight,” Douche Bag says.

“Sorry,” I say.

She nods and starts the lecture back up again, her eyes continuing to linger on us.

He slides over to his original seat.

I strike my earlier thought. I have no idea what El sees in this weak shithead.

I lean over the now vacant chair, testing my luck one final time. “Don’t worry. I’ll be around. We can continue this conversation soon.”

He scoffs me off, shaking his head. His fingers start tapping on the keys of his laptop as he accepts his defeat for this round.

My order appears and I
straighten, intending to claim my coffee and find a seat, when a pretty
twenty-something brunette races forward in a puff of sweet, floral-scented
perfume, and grabs it.
“Miss,” I begin, “that’s—”
She takes a sip and
grimaces. “What is this?” She turns to the counter. “Excuse me,” she calls out.
“My drink is wrong.”
“Because it’s not your
drink,” Karen reprimands her, setting a new cup on the counter. “
This is your drink.” She reaches
for my cup and turns it around, pointing to the name scribbled on the side.
“This one’s for Shane.” She glances at me. “I’ll be right back to fix this. I
have another customer.”
I wave my acknowledgment
and she hurries away, while my floral-scented coffee thief faces me, her
porcelain cheeks flushed, her full, really damn distracting mouth, painted
pink. “I’m so sorry,” she offers quickly. “I thought I was the only one without
my coffee and I was in a hurry.” She starts to hand me my coffee and then
quickly sets it on the counter. “You can’t have that. I drank out of it.”
“I saw that,” I say,
picking it up. “You grimaced with disgust after trying it.”
Her eyes, a pale blue that
matches the short-sleeved silk blouse, go wide. “Oh. I mean no. Or I did, but
not because it’s a bad cup of coffee. It’s just very strong.”
“It’s a triple-shot latte.”
“A triple,” she says,
looking quite serious. “Did you know that in some third- world countries they
bottle that stuff and sell it as a way to grow hair on your chest.” She lowers
her voice and whispers, “That’s not a good look for me.”
“Fortunately,” I say in the
midst of a chuckle I would have claimed wasn’t possible five minutes ago, “I
don’t share that dilemma.” I lift my cup and add, “Cheers,” before taking a
drink, the heavy, rich flavor sliding over my tongue.
She pales, looking
exceedingly uncomfortable, before repeating, “I
drank from that cup.”
“I know,” I say, offering
it back to her. “Try another drink.”
She takes the cup and sets
it on the counter. “I can’t drink that. And you can’t either.” She points to
the hole on top, now smudged pink. “My lipstick is all over it and I really
hate to tell you this but it’s all over you too and . . .” She laughs, a soft,
sexy sound, her hands settling on her slender, but curvy hips, accented by a
fitted black skirt. “Sorry. I don’t mean to laugh, but it’s not a good shade
for you.”
I laugh now too, officially
and impossibly charmed by this woman in spite of being in the middle of what
feels like World War III. “Seems you know how to make a lasting impression.”
“Thankfully it’s not
lasting,” she says. “It’ll wipe right off. And thank you for being such a good
sport. I really am sorry again for all of this.”
“Apologize by getting it
off me.”
Confusion puckers her brow.
“What?”
“You put it on me.” I grab
a napkin from the counter and offer it to her. “You get it off.”
“I put it on the cup,” she
says, clearly recovering her quick wit. “
You put it on you.”
“I assure you, that had I
put it on me, we both would have enjoyed it much more than we are now.” I
glance at the napkin.
“Are you going to help me?”
Her cheeks flush and she
hugs herself, her sudden shyness an intriguing contrast to her confident
banter. “I’ll let you know if you don’t get it all.”
My apparently lipstick-
stained lips curve at her quick wit but I take the napkin and wipe my mouth,
arching a questioning brow when I’m done. She points to the corner of my mouth.
“A little more on the left.”
I hand her the napkin. “You do it.”
She inhales, as if for
courage, but takes it. “Fine,” she says, stepping closer, that wicked sweet
scent of hers teasing my nostrils. Wasting no time, she reaches for my mouth,
her body swaying in my direction while my hand itches to settle at her waist. I
want this woman and I’m not letting her get away.
“There,” she says, her arm
lowering, and not about to let her escape, I capture her hand, holding it and
the napkin between us.

Those gorgeous pale blue eyes of hers dart to mine,
wide with surprise, the connection sparking an unmistakable charge between us…

When Mikayla Strong graduated college, she expected to hit the ground running. Instead, she’s stuck getting coffee and spellchecking contracts for BassNote Productions. She won’t give up her dream of working in events management, but no matter how many hours she spends scrolling through job ads during her lunch breaks there just don’t seem to be any jobs anymore.

A chance meeting with the drummer of Black Lilith, a hot new band getting ready for its first international tour, sends Mikayla careening out of her comfort zone and into a world of sex, drugs, and rock n roll. She goes from overqualified barista to overqualified PA overnight, and even though the band’s lead singer, Logan Todd, pushes all of her buttons, Mikayla thinks she might just be able to make this new job work for her.

But Black Lilith isn’t as tightknit as they seem in interviews. As Mikayla gets to know the four band members better, a web of lies and heartbreak begins to show itself. Between fans with knives, fights in hotel corridors, and the band’s very strict ‘no dating PAs’ rule, Mikayla’s growing attraction to Logan Todd may be the least of her problems. At this rate, she’ll be lucky if she makes it to the end of the tour…

BLIND SALVAGE INTERVIEW

Rylee Adamson Interview

My name is Rylee. I don’t like it when people use my last name, it reminds me of where I’m from and the people who turned on me. I was adopted as a baby into a family where they couldn’t have children naturally. But when I was ten, my parents got a surprise. A miracle baby, a little girl with golden hair and bright blue eyes.

When I was sixteen, I was accused of killing her; our parents believed the police. But I don’t really want to talk about that as it was over ten years ago. I’m trying to let it go.

I’m a Tracker, a supernatural who can trace anyone’s life threads finding them regardless of whether they’re dead or alive. I prefer alive, dead is messy, but so often that is the case. I’m also an Immune, magic slides off me as if I don’t exist. That is handy.

Gods, I’m sweating here trying not to swear. Are you sure I can’t use at least one four letter word? No, of course not.

I never Track adults. They can bloody well take care of themselves. I only ever Track kids. Probably I’m trying to make up for not saving my sister. But I’ll leave that up to the psychologists out there to decipher my motives.

Alex is my buddy, a werewolf trapped between forms; half man, half wolf. Submissive, goofy and loyal to the bone he is the one spot of bright light in my life. I think you’d like him the best of the two of us. I know I can be a hard ass, I can’t seem to help it. But Alex has never met someone he couldn’t win over with a floppy wave of his oversized paws. He might not be the best back-up, but he makes me smile and in my world, that is enough.

Someone once asked me what it was like to Track kids for parents who had no one else to turn to, for parents who’d lost hope that their child would ever be returned to them.

This was my answer: It’s a weight and a responsibility that sits on me, I took an oath that I would never stop Tracking lost children. That I would put my life on the line for those who can’t save themselves, and that I would fight to my last breath to keep a child alive.

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

___

Agent Liam O’Shea Interview

The Daily Grind

September 13/2012

Cold Case Heats Back Up?

There is no such thing as a case that is too cold, at least according to Liam O’Shea. He has been an FBI agent for over ten years, and in that time only one case of his remains open.

His first case.

At the time, Agent O’Shea was fresh out of the academy and “still believed that justice always prevails”. Then along came the case that would chill the hearts of every agent working it, many of them parent’s themselves.

Rylee Adamson, then sixteen years old, was accused and charged with killing her younger sister Berget; whose body was never found. The case made media headlines as Adamson went missing for close to two weeks and a man hunt the size this state had not seen in a hundred years ensued. Adopted into the Adamson household, her younger sister was a ‘miracle’ baby that by all accounts Adamson adored. It wasn’t until an outing the two girls took to Deerborn Park that Adamson’s actions would come into question.

“The younger girl’s blood and clothing was found several blocks away tucked behind a dumpster,” Agent O’Shea said, “and the only hair fibers found were the two girls, Berget and Rylee. There is no one else it could be that killed little Berget.” To O’Shea, it was an open and shut case; and with Adamson’s disappearing act he felt her guilt was obvious. But he, along with the other police enforcement involved where denied the closing of the case on a technicality in court.

“It’s only because of her lawyer, hired by Giselle Trinkoff, that Adamson wasn’t found guilty. A technicality I aim to right.” O’Shea states.

To date, Adamson has not been proven guilty of any charges, though O’Shea is determined to change that fact. “She got away once. She won’t get away again.”

For now, Adamson is MIA, her whereabouts unknown to anyone but Agent O’Shea. He claims that he finally has new evidence that Adamson killed her younger sister, hid the body, and dodged the penal system.

This reporter isn’t so sure; there are too many unknowns to state that Adamson did it without a shadow of a doubt. But then, I always root for the underdog. And in this case, no one is more of an underdog than Rylee Adamson.
